The Top Nine Mosaic Murals in San Francisco:
An historical survey...

1998-2003
HARVEY MILK CIVIL RIGHTS ACADEMY
4235 19th St. at Collingwood St.
By Ellen Blakeley

A sparkling triptych of murals originated by Blakeley along with input from the students. Blakeley’s trademark glass technique embeds the students’ drawings, poems, and photos underneath the safety-glass tesserae. The colorful grout creates movement and depth throughout each mural. The first mural, begun in 1998, depicts Literacy, the second has a theme of Math and Science, and the final installation celebrates Civil Rights and Equality. A must see! All murals approximately 18 ft. x 6 ft. Paper, glass metal, paint, broken safety glass.
